VAKABAUTA URBAN VILLAGE

This project won first prize in the Royal British Institute of Architects – USA Chapter: Building a Sustainable World: Life in the Balance, 2007.

A collaborative project with Toby Kyle and Kamineli Vuadreu architects. Vakabauta is a medium density housing project for displaced Fijians that seeks to replicate the structure of the traditional rural village in an urban environment where community is the focal point.

Central to the design is sustainability and a clearly articulated sequencing of spaces from private to semi-private to semi-public, and finally to public which includes the growing, processing and selling of basic food crops and bamboo.

This sequencing allows for the development of a nuanced and productive community structure that is always respectful of the individual.
