WOOLLAHRA HOUSE

“The design is uncluttered rather than minimal… at the same time having textures that have a sense of memory.” Babette Hayes SMH

The brief for this Woollahra home renovation and extension was somewhat open-ended, but then again, it was Chris Cole’s first project out of university and the clients were his parents.

A blank canvas brief and familial trust don’t always end up well, but in this case the result was very special for all concerned, and led to it being a finalist in The Australian Institute of Architects’ People’s Choice Awards.

Maintaining the home’s neo-Georgian façade, the interior was opened up, the pool filled in and a double-height timber structure was created to give equal prominence to the garden and built spaces, blurring the lines between them, and creating a much-used and much loved ‘outside room’.
